Winning Project of the 2024 Call

The Retailers before the Guild: An Approach to Reselling before the Privilege of 1447 through Municipal Ordinances

The winning project, by Carles Vela Aulesa, aims to delve into the organization of retailers before the guild’s creation. The privilege granted by Queen Maria to form the Confraternity of Saint Michael on September 12, 1447, marked a foundational milestone, but did not signify the start of the retailer community in medieval Barcelona. Instead, this privilege demonstrates that the retailers already had a distinct identity and enough organization to negotiate as a group with the queen.

Ultimately, the project aims to uncover the world of retailing before the guild’s privilege by studying the municipal ordinances that regulated retail.
