THE SWALLOWS OF BARCELONA
EXHIBITION OF FINALISTS ART WORKS OF THE PREMI RENART 2024.
From June 22nd to the 5th of July we exposed the prized works and the finalists of Premi Renart 2024, which was held under the theme “The Swallows of Barcelona.”
is an exhibition full of contrast, which captures the beauty of the swallow but also the individual perspective each artist has of Barcelona sometimes brilliant, other times dark. The works shown talk about the city in a unique way, linking the individual experience with the collective.

PREVIOUS EXHIBITIONS
We present a second exhibition dedicated to the artist and decorator Joaquim Renart. From April 22 to May 24, 2024, Joaquim Renart’s exhibit, From Ciutat Vella to the Eixample , curated by Josep Bracons. This is the second exhibition the organization has dedicated to the figure of the illustrator and decorator Joaquim Renart i Garcia, thanks to a donation from Joan Proubasta Renart. Comprising more than twenty original works by Renart, this exhibition offers a detailed graphic chronicle of daily life in the city of Barcelona, intertwining the artist’s most intimate aspects with elements that profoundly impact the public sphere.

From March 28 to May 23, the exhibition Images of Persistence and Change: Historical Maps of Barcelona (16th-20th centuries) was held at the guild hall 8sala gremial).
The exhibition showcases 25 maps, offering a journey through Barcelona’s history and urban development, revealing the evolution of these graphics and various ways of viewing the city.

GOIGS: BEYOND DEVOTION The goigs are a medieval musical and poetic genre dedicated to the Virgin Mary that became widespread across the Christian saints by the 17th century. Their popularity led to them being printed and distributed among the faithful.
Their popularity resulted in thousands of “Goigs” being edited in the Catalan Countries with large print runs, and by the 19th century, they became a collectible element, which has favored the preservation of a large number of “Goigs,” like those preserved by the Associació Antic Gremi Revenedors, 1447, thanks to generous donations from members, such as Mr. Joan Proubasta i Renart. For this exhibition, a number of specimens from the 18th-19th centuries were selected and restored.
This collection allows us to take a journey into the development of this typology. Thanks to this, we can discuss the various variations before a model was consolidated, the active role of women in the printing world, Catalan as the preeminent language in popular culture despite a diglossia where most printed materials were in Spanish or Latin, engraving and printing techniques, and more.

Joaquim Renart i Garcia was a prominent figure in Barcelona’s cultural and artistic life during the early 20th century. Born in Barcelona in 1879 and passing in 1961, his family business, Renart i Cia., provided him stability, producing decorative and religious art objects.
Driven by a civic spirit that was distinctly noucentista and deeply Catalanist, characterized by a desire to contribute to the creation of a civilized and advanced country where arts and culture played a central role, Joaquim Renart was closely associated with highly representative institutions such as the Orfeó Català and the Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi, among others. At the age of 39, Renart began writing a personal diary, which he maintained diligently and consistently for 43 years, until just days before his death. Thus, the Diary of Joaquim Renart firmly aligns with the tradition of great Barcelona diaries, alongside those of Jeroni Pujades, Bruniquer, the Baron of Maldà, and others.
The uniqueness of Joaquim Renart’s Diary lies in its dual nature as both a literary and visual chronicle, as the written entries are accompanied by drawings with precise, meticulous lines and a remarkable ability to synthesize. In this exhibition, the Associació Antic Gremi Revenedors, 1447 presents a small but highly representative selection, showcasing these drawings by Joaquim Renart that are part of its artistic collection.
